Truth, Lies & Alibis: Encounters in Images and Words by Christine Kinsey
Full colour / Hard cover / Size H27cm x W23.5cm / 204 pages / Encounters Series, Publisher H’mm Foundation, Swansea.
Creating Truth, Lies & Alibis has been a way of gathering the threads of the influences that have informed my visual and written language. I have developed a group of female characters who accompany me on an odyssey that began in my childhood in the industrial valleys of south-east Wales. They continue to enact roles as part of a visual narrative that explores the interface between my interior and exterior life, with each image forming a fragment of an ongoing journey of becoming.
Reviews of Truth, Lies & Alibis
Christine Kinsey is one of the foremost artists in Wales. She has dedicated the best part of five decades to painting and drawing, and in so doing has illuminated a world where women had previously existed on the periphery of vision…. This book, I believe, will delight both enthusiasts and newcomers to her work. Its breadth and depth are certainly worthy of close study, for behind the canvasses is a life committed to painting and an artist who deserves worldwide recognition. ~ Menna Elfyn, Emerita Professor of Creative Writing, University of Wales Trinity St David
Christine Kinsey deserves to be congratulated on producing a body of paintings that enables us, as we view them, ‘to witness’, in R.S. Thomas’s words, ‘the extent/Of the spectrum and grow rich/With looking.’ Published on the 10th anniversary of The H’mm Foundation, this volume as a tribute to her work over a lengthy career is long overdue, and richly deserved. ~ M. Wynn Thomas, Professor of English and Emyr Humphreys Professor of Welsh Writing in English, Swansea University
HON 2022: Artistiaid Benywaidd yng Nghymru – Women Artists in Wales, Curated and Edited by Christine Kinsey
Artist Christine Kinsey, the curator and editor of this book has been highlighting the lack of representation of work by women artists since her time as Co-Founder and the first woman Artistic Director of Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. Her concept for this book is to present ‘HON’ at the centre of panoramic views of Wales where each of the women artists from different backgrounds and life experiences and who work in a range of medium, reflect their particular perception of Wales in images and words. This book therefore will open our eyes to the testimonies of ten remarkable artists who also identify and feel part of a community and nation that is open to new diverse ideas. They represent the ideals of a forward-thinking country which is ready to challenge and achieve marvels with both ‘sensation’ and ‘watchfulness’. Their unique vision, as well as togetherness, that most needed of resilient aspiration will build strong bridges-of-hope that will counteract the world’s challenging and troubled times. ~ Menna Elfyn, Emerita Professor of Creative Writing, University of Wales Trinity St David
